Teach In 2012: Changing the World from the Classroom

Sustainability Education is for everyone! Participate in the 2012 Teach In by joining faculty from across BC in educating students on how their discipline can change the world!

Here's How:

(Step 1) Sign up today!

By signing up you're letting us know you're participating. You're joining the movement and taking action in your classroom.

(Step 2) Reflect on your courses and review your course outlines:

• Look for existing opportunities within your courses where you could ask and explore the question, how can my course or discipline help create a more just, equitable and sustainable future?

• Not seeing anything? Then create an opportunity. During March 5-17, plan a class discussion, assignment or project where students can explore how their courses are world changing.

(Step 3) Choose a topic and define your question:

For Example:

• What does a more sustainable and equitable campus/city/community/society look like and how can we use what we learn in this class to work towards this vision?

• Choose a relevant issue on campus, perhaps to do with transportation, energy, food or media. How can we develop solutions for these issues with classes from other disciplines?

• What is the purpose of post-secondary institutions? What really are the "borders" of our campus? What bold new directions can we envision for our campus community? How can we put these directions into motion in this class?

Want some help? Have some questions? Contact info@campusclimatenetwork.org and we'll try to help and try to connect you with faculty on your campus who have participated before.

(Step 4) Choose a class activity:

(1) In-class Dialogue
(2) Class Assignment + In-class Dialogue
(3) Class Project(s) + In-class Dialogue

(Step 5) Follow up and report

Following March 5-17, a questionnaire/survey will be sent out asking for you to share what you've done. These projects, dialogues and discussions will be shared in a report and great projects will be showcased on our website.

Bike, walk, or take the bus to school at least twice this week.

Did you know that in most urban areas, taking the bus is just as fast as driving if you plan your trip a head of time? Look up a schedule in your spare time! Saving the planet has never been this easy...

Start shopping at farmers or pocket markets at least once a week

Local farmers and the amazing people that offer deliciously organic food grown in your area support the environment and it’s time we support them!

Local farmers do significantly less harm to the land and produce healthier alternatives to massive factory farmed foods. Try incorporating local foods to your diet and start shopping at farmers or pocket markets to promote the sustainability and help us goBEYOND climate neutral!

Eat at least one meal a day that is meat-free

Cars on the road aren’t the worst contributers to rising carbon levels...meat production is. Help lower the demand for meat, lowering the overall production.

Take it one step at a time and start by learning how to prepare awesome vegetarian dishes. If a full-veg meal is too hard, try reducing your meat intake and have some white meats. Think about where your food comes from, and imagine all the carbon used to sustain that cycle.

Install heavy curtains on windows and glass doors to keep the heat in

Not a morning person? Catch some shut-eye and goBEYOND carbon neutral with heavier curtains!

Not a morning person? Catch some shut-eye and goBEYOND carbon neutral with heavier curtains! Those wimpy curtains that let the bright lights shine into your room are also letting heat escape.

Get thicker, heavier curtains to make sure you’re undisturbed in the morning and keeping our world safe.

Grow some vegetables and herbs in containers on your window sills

Imagine all the human and fuel power required to bring your food to your local grocery store! Think of all the people driving out to farms and factories and all the machines they’re using...then think of the trucks and planes required to bring all that food out here.

Now imagine the amount of energy it takes you to roll out of bed and water a plant on your window sill.

It’s one small step for you, one giant leap for carbon neutrality!

Always turn your engine off when you’re stopped for more than a few moments.

Vehicles emit the evil climate change villain known as carbon dioxide. Help us defeat this by minimizing your emissions and turning off your engines when stopped for more than a few moments.

Keeping your engine on for unneccesarily long periods, idling, not only hurts the environment, it hurts your wallet! Keep idling at a minimum and watch as your gas guzzler turns fuel efficient.
